Grandmaster Myung Jae Nam started his martial arts training in 1948. His introduction to Hapkido began with Grandmaster Ji Han Jae at the Joong Bu Si Jang location in the late 1950s. This was Ji Han Jae's third location in Seoul. Other Grandmasters that joined Grandmaster Myung at that time were Grandmasters Han Bong Soo and Choi Sea Oh.Grandmaster Myung was one of the original members of the Korean Hapkido Association which was formed in 1965 at the expressed request of then Korean President Park Chung Hee.
The Korean Hapkido Association was formed with the assistance of Park Jong Kyu. As the head of the Presidential Protective Forces he was one of the most powerful men in Korea at the time.
In 1969, Grandmaster Myung separated from the Korean Hapkido Association to form his own group called the Han Kuk Hapki Sool Hwe.
Three years later he changed the name of his group to the Han Kuk Hapki Hwe, and moved his headquarters from Incheon to Buk Chang-Dong, Chung-Gu, Seoul. In October 1973, while still maintaining his own organization, he collaborated in the foundation of the Dae Han Min Kuk Hapkido Hyup Hwe. He was appointed as its executive director and remained affiliated with that organization until 1980. Grandmaster Myung co-founded the Korean Hapkido Association in 1974 at the age of 36. In August 1974, he again changed the name of his organization to Kuk Jae Yong Meng Hapki Hwe which is presently known in English as the International Hapkido Federation.
Over the years, Grandmaster Myung produced numerous books and videos.
In the years after the first International Hapkido Competition (April 1990), Grandmaster Myung traveled around the world to promote his unique style and the International Hapkido Federation.
In August 1993, Grandmaster Myung moved the International Hapkido Federation headquarters to Yong-In, Gyeonggi-do Korea.
On August 3, 1999, Grandmaster Myung Jae Nam passed away in Yong-In. Grandmaster Myung Jae Nam's son, Myung Sung Kwang was appointed the 2nd Doju and assumed leadership of the International H.K.D Federation in 1999.
